Grouphut.com was developed by group leaders for group leaders. Founder and serial volunteer leader, Ken Walker, felt there was a need on the Internet for an integrated suite of tools that could help leaders manage their groups. He felt the tools should be easy to use and centered around the membership roster to facilitate quick communication with the group.
Ken also felt the core features of the site should be free without requiring users to forgo their privacy for those "free" services. Yes, the site does have ads (limited to a small panel) to make its services possible, but advertisers are not allowed to invade user privacy with tracking software or Grouphut will not share member information with third parties.
We do not consider Grouphut to be a social networking site in the same vein of much bigger and better financed websites. Our goal is not to figure out ways to keep people online in a virtual world. Instead, we provide tools and information that will allow people to be more effective and have more fun in the real world.
Grouphut.com is still an infant in what we hope will be a long, productive life. We will continue to expand its service offering to meet the needs of groups. We know that site customization is fairly limited now. We wanted to release a core set of features, then create new tools based on user input.
Grouphut is based in the wonderful, small community of Brisbane, California, USA. Brisbane is a stone's throw from San Francisco and benefits from the technical and social fountain of ideas that spring from the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley. Unlike many of our business neighbors, we are not venture capital financed. We are literally a handful of people doing what we love and trying to improve the world.
